FAQs
Do I need any experience to start?
No, you don't need any experience to start training. Students and practioners of all levels are welcome.
What are classes like for a beginner?
For beginners to the martial arts and Aikido, we'll start out with a review of dojo etiquette, warm up exercises, and stretches. Next will be basics with footwork, rolls, and falls. Finally it will move into paired practice. Beginners will be paired with more senior students who will assist in movement and technique training.
Do I need any special equipment or gear to begin?
There is no special equipment or gear required. If it's you're very first time training we recommend comfy exercise clothing like sweatpants and a t-shirt. As you train more you will want to purchase an Aikido or Judo gi and possibly wooden weapons. A gi is a thick but flexible woven cotten uniform crafted to withstand the movements and grabs used in Aikido training, so it is highly recommended to have one within the first couple of months of training. We have some recommended shops in our Resources section, but always feel free to ask your seniors and sensei for guidance on chosing equipment.
Is there a minimum number of classes I need to attend?
We don't require a minimum number of classes to attend. We understand that there other priorities and responsibilities that we all have, like family work, school, etc... It is best to attend as many classes as possible, but it's more important to practice when you're able.
Any other advice?
There are two main pieces of advice that we can offer. First: have fun and make sure that training in aikido enhances your life in some way. Second: If new to Aikido or the martial arts - allow yourself to be new. One common feeling among beginners is the feeling of being lost or possibly feeling like you're not making any progress. If you are feeling that way, don't worry - it's ok. There's a lot of new information to learn as well as training your body to build the muscle memory for the movements and techniques. It's most important to allow yourself to be new and be ok with feeling a little lost. We promise that will change the more you practice. Keep at it and just remember that for anything new, we all must start somewhere. No one starts as an expert, it takes time to grow and learn new things.
